Piglet Weaning Care
The First Month After Weaning Decides More Than You'd Think 

Wean too early — typically before 25 days — and intestinal enterocytes take serious damage. Villus height drops sharply. The shortened villi flatten and fuse into a smooth intestinal surface, cutting nutrient absorption and opening the door to infection. Full epithelial repair after weaning takes at least four weeks — a window most producers underestimate.

A piglet's intestine is immature — highly permeable, with loosely connected epithelial cells that form a fragile mechanical barrier. Weaning stress, sudden diet changes, and common infections don't just damage the mucosa; they weaken that barrier further, right when the piglet can least afford it.

The result: increased permeability, an immature epithelium, and a barrier that lets sensitive antigens overstimulate the immune system — slowing growth just when it should be accelerating.

In the grow-finish phase, gut damage rarely looks like disease. There's no diarrhea outbreak, no mortality spike — just a slow erosion of feed efficiency that usually gets blamed on genetics, season, or ingredient batch. The real cause is often subclinical, and it starts in the gut.
