Summer is here, the environment is hot and humid, and chicken coccidiosis is most likely to occur at this time. Coccidiosis is a common intestinal disease of chickens caused by Eimeria coccidia infection. It occurs in different breeds, ages and seasons. Especially for high-quality chicken breeds with relatively rough breeding environments, coccidia is an unavoidable topic.

Characteristics of coccidia


The life history of coccidia

The development of coccidia is mainly divided into three reproductive stages: sporogeny (asexual), schizogony (sexual) and gametogenesis.

1st stage: 1-4 days, repeated reproduction, formation of schizonts, destruction of intestinal epithelial cells.
2nd stage: 5-7 days, the second generation merozoites differentiate into large and small gametophytes and form zygotes, which grow into oocysts and are excreted from the body.
3rd stage: Under suitable conditions, the oocysts undergo sporulation and become infectious, leading to the next round of infection.




The dangers of coccidia

1.    Loss of appetite; malabsorption of nutrients and poor pigmentation.

2.    Slow growth; anemia and weight loss.

3.    The stunted development of laying hens results in substandard body weight and underdeveloped reproductive organs.

4.    The egg production peak takes a long time or there is no egg production peak.

5.    Secondary infection with other diseases.

6.    Severe cases can cause diarrhea, bloody stools, and acute death.

The difference between different coccidia

The seven species of coccidia are ranked in order of pathogenicity: Eimeria tenella > Mayerella > Eimeria brucei > Eimeria giantis > Eimeria aeruginosa > Mitigating Eimeria > Eimeria precoccus.

 

These seven species of coccidia are ordered by the size of the chicken flock, which is Eimeria tenella > Eimeria aeruginosa > Eimeria giantis > Mayerella

> Eimeria brucei > Mitigating Eimeria > Eimeria precoccus (because the heap type and giant Eimeria have the highest prevalence, poisonous and Eimeria brucei The prevalence of Eimeria precoccus is relatively low (based on the weighted ranking of prevalence and pathogenicity), and Eimeria precoccus is basically non-pathogenic.

7 common types of chicken coccidia

Chickens are the only natural host for these seven species of Eimeria. (Other poultry are infected with coccidia of other species)

 

Regarding the introduction of coccidia, everyone must be familiar with it after understanding the above content. But how to prevent coccidiosis, or how to take medicine when you get coccidiosis? Because everyone who knows about coccidiosis knows that this pathogenic microorganism is the most susceptible to drug resistance.

 

Therefore, it is now insensitive to many anti-coccidial drugs, and the very few that are sensitive are not so effective. The use of medication at this time must follow several principles. First of all, single-prescription drugs cannot be used, otherwise not only will the effect be ineffective, but it will also be easy to become drug-resistant.

 

The second is to rotate the use of medicines, which means that you need to enrich the species and birds to ensure that you do not catch any medicine when using the medicine. Furthermore, combined with the first point above, it is to use compound anti-coccidial drugs, rather than using them alone, which is most wasteful.
